When repair makes sense
Isolated failures, recent installation, structural soundness, low disruption tolerance. A targeted repair can extend a good base by years at a fraction of the replacement cost.
When replacement is better value
Widespread failure, repeated patching, weak or missing sub-base, poor drainage, or a significant upgrade in finish expectation. Repeated repairs on a failing base rarely justify the cumulative spend.
The lifecycle test
Ask what both options cost over ten years, not just today. A repair today may save cost short-term but accelerate a more expensive reinstatement within a few years.
Warning signs in low-priced proposals
A price that looks dramatically cheaper usually means something has been omitted or assumed away.
No sub-base specification
Any proposal that does not describe depth, material, and compaction of the sub-base is comparing a different scope to one that does.
Drainage not mentioned
On most residential driveways, fall design and drainage provision are non-optional. Omitting them usually means problems later.
No waste removal detail
Excavation from a standard driveway typically produces significant spoil. If removal is not included, it is either being cut from price or skipped.
Vague finish description
Edging details, border courses, and finish tolerances should be explicit. Vague scope allows corners to be cut post-contract.

A lower price is not more useful if the scope has been stripped back in ways that are hard to see at first glance.
